Naming Services

Naming Services for children and adults are special occasions and are very meaningful to the person being named, as well as their family and friends.  The Naming Service is often conducted in a Church but can take place at other appropriate locations such as hospitals or at home. Flowers are used in a Spiritualist Naming Service to indicate the pure and natural aspects of our existence. Spiritualists recognize that which we call God, created everyone and everything with love enabling us to learn and grow spiritually.  For both a child and an adult, a Naming Service is a celebration and acknowledgement of being part of the greater family of humankind, of the love engendered in the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man, our first and second principles.

In the Naming Service it is customary to give a Spirit name provided by those in the Spirit world, which will encourage and inspire the person when the need arises. All present at the Naming Service are asked to be Spiritual sponsors for the person being named.

Please inquire with the committee should you want to be named, or name your child at Horwich NSC.  The cost will depend on the circumstances, and may include for example, expenses for a Minister of the religion to travel and perform the ceremony.  Horwich NSC do intend to run occasional Naming Services where a number of its members may want to be 'named'.

 Marriages

SNU Ministers and Officiants are fully trained to carry out marriage ceremonies, which includes the necessary legally binding vows.  At Horwich NSC, a Registrar would be needed to witness and record the vows, although some Churches have an  'Authorised Person' who records the marriage in the same was as a Registrar.  Remember that when vows are exchanged in the Spiritualist service those in the Spirit world are also invited as witnesses. Special people in the Spirit world who cannot be there in body can certainly be there in spiritual form, bringing the love which continues to flow from them.

Please inquire with the committee should you want to solemnize a marriage at Horwich NSC.  To hire the church, we request a minimum donation of £125 as of September 2016.  Other costs to consider include the costs of the registrar and a Minister or Officiant to conduct the ceremony.  We will happily support you in any way we can to make this your perfect day.

 Funerals

SNU Ministers and Officiants are trained to a very high standard; therefore they are very capable of assisting in the planning and officiating of funeral services.  It may be that you are thinking about how you would like your own funeral to be conducted or because you may need to make arrangements for someone else at this time.  If you wish to leave instructions for your next of kin to let your funeral wishes be know, there is a form to download as follows: Instruction to my next of kin after death. The form should be left in known place, possibly with personal papers and/or your will.

If you are arranging a funeral for someone else, has the person left a will and/or wishes either in their will or in writing somewhere? If so, then you should respect those wishes, although the executor or next of kin has the final say.  The service is a time for remembering and paying tribute to the life and actions of the deceased. It is a time to celebrate their life on earth, so that those who remain remember them with joy and thankfulness for the shared memories.

The Spiritualist Service emphasises the continuation of life in another sphere of existence beyond this earthly realm, and that the death of the physical body is merely the shedding of a mortal garment that has served its purpose.  The Spiritualist Service may be personalised for those who would wish a non-traditional religious service, most Spiritualist Ministers and Officiants will fit in with the wishes of the deceased and our Services do not include what many see as orthodox religious language.  All services are conducted in a Spiritual manner with both dignity and respect. Types of ceremonies offered include Burial, Cremation, Scattering of Ashes & Memorial Services.

Please inquire with the committee should you want to plan a funeral with Horwich NSC.   To hire the church, we request a minimum donation of £125 as of September 2016.  Other costs to consider include the costs of a Minister or Officiant to conduct the funeral.  We are delighted to work with you to ensure any last detail is as you, or our departed spirit friend wishes.
